WELCOME TO THE TOWER RECORDS COMMUNITY
Daryl Hayott
Daryl Hayott (b. 5 November 1960 in São Paulo, Brazil), is a self-taught jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist who plays drums, bass, percussion instruments, keyboards and trumpet. He has twice been voted Brazilian Bass Player of the Year.
Homeless for nearly two years as a teenager in New York City Hayott became a session drummer and occasional bass player for Electric Lady Studios. Shortly thereafter, he was signed by Warner Brothers and toured with the international group Osibissa. He also played with other famous acts such as Black Ivory. Being still a minor, several African American recording artists guided him as he toured in the professional music world. He credits these mentors with helping him develop a deeper spiritual understanding of music.
Setting records in track and field at his high school, he later earned a B.A. in psychology and did two tours of duty in the United States Marine Corps. He excelled in martial arts to the point of having a professional karate career, earning numerous trophies in victorious bouts. "Sensei Hayott," as he is known, studied Gōjū-ryū karate under Grand Master Leon Wallace in Harlem, New York. He traveled and fought as a member of the Budweiser Kickboxing Team with friend and fellow martial artist Billy Blanks Hayott was featured in Karate Illustrated magazine and won the U.S. title of East Coast Champion three times.Having torn the muscles in his hand, he returned to playing bass guitar as a means of physiotherapy. Though he could already play at a basic level from his time with Electric Lady Studios, he now began to practice in earnest, though without formal instruction. He resumed touring with Warner Brothers and playing with musicians such as Sade, Teddy Riley and Al Jarreau, appearing on several artists' records and CDs dating back to the late 1960s.
In tribute to his interest in spirituality, Hayott's friends affectionately named him "Confucius Bass". His band, Konfuciousklan Tribe, released the album Tribal Passages on Hayott's record label, Keep the Light Records, and has performed film sound tracks. Hayott has had minimal formal music education despite being proficient at several musical instruments. The first time he ever played a full drumset was when his best friend Tony, a protégé of Jimi Hendrix, brought him for a visit to Electric Lady Studios. Hearing him playing, the audio engineers promptly asked him if he would play for them as a session musician. In addition to music and martial arts, Hayott also draws, paints, sculpts, and takes part in fencing and motorcycle speed racing.
Daryl Hayott is currently CEO of KEEP THE LIGHT RECORDS, is involved in several cd projects and an indie film. His newest CD release, MYSTICAL LINES, is available at http://www.KeeptheLightRecords.com.
